Listening to God's word ... Sharing faith and prayer.
This is the basic movement of our religion lessons. So far, we have heard a guided meditation based on the gospel story of Jesus and the Children and the story of Jesus lost and found in the temple when he was 12 years old. Children were invited to respond in drawing and writing. After preparations to lead the prayer service on October 3rd, we will be considering the scripture acccount of the creation of our world.

In our World
Social Studies learning this month brings us back in time. We observed the Montessori history experiments that are the sensorial experiences for the making of our Earth, solar system, and galaxies. We heard the First Great Lesson and listened to it repeated in two beautiful books about the formation of Earth and our universe. These books have been added to our classroom environment. Next week we will begin making window murals about what we learned. Mr. Boyd will be helping us with this project.

Word of the Day
After observing for a week, the first year students have joined us in our traditional practice of "Word of the Day". Word of the Day is designed to help young children develop an appreciation for interesting words. In this work, the hope is to set a foundation for a life-long love of words and have fun with language. Each day we discuss a selected word. Sometimes we consult a dictionary. Children write the word 2x, illustrate its meaning, and use it in a sentence. We challenge ourselves to use the word 5x during the day ... including at home. Ask about the Word of the Day.
Magazine Reading Groups
The Scholastic News Magazines have finally arrived. Yeah! They form the basis of our leveled reading program. I have ordered extra copies for each level so that the levels can remain fluid at this time until I can determine the best fit for each child. Follow-up homework is expected for the work done in class. Please see the homework section of this website for details. Additional homework, in written form, may also be sent home.
